Masterotaku originally started a HD texture pack for Mario Kart 64 a while ago (the link found below). Yet it was incomplete and there were texture issues. So I want to thank masterotaku for providing the basics for this texture pack. This texture pack is massive to undertake, especially the menu screens with tens of duplicated textures for each texture. Still, I wanted to finish the N64 HD texture packs which probably first started with Ocarina of Time.
Super Mario 64 soon followed, then by Super Smash Bros 64 and thereafter Majora's Mask. Now the time has come for Mario Kart 64 to be fully realized. What comes after Mario Kart 64? No idea, perhaps Star Fox 64?This texture pack is based on porting textures from Project64 (Nintendo 64) texture packs, just like my other texture packs. Check out my signature for links for my other texture packs of N64 games for Dolphin (Virtual Console or GameCube re-release).Texture Pack status- Current version is: V1.0.- Both the PNG and DDS pack are uploaded and optimized through optiPNG.- Both packs are packed in the 7-zip format.
Download the Mario Kart 64 ROM for Nintendo 64 /N64. Filename: Mario Kart 64 (E) (V1.1) !.zip. Works with Android, Windows, and Mac OS X devices. Mario Kart 64 is a kart racing game in which the player controls one of eight selectable Mario characters who race in karts in different race tracks that vary in shape.
You might need to download 7-zip to unpack them. Newer versions of WinRAR should work too.- 3086 textures ported so far- Supported Mario Kart 64 versions: NTSC-U (PAL and NTSC-J should work too).- DDS BC7 pack requires around 250 MB of RAM while the PNG pack requires around 900 MB of RAM.- Use the latest development build or the latest Ishiiruka build which allows for DDS BC7 support and decreased RAM usage for DDS BC7 packs. V1.0:- Finished all 20 courses- Replaced/improved cup icons and texts- Finished battle courses menu- Finished minimaps and their icons- Ported more menu texture duplicates- Replaced static character portraits (especially for Yoshi)- Removed unused textures- Replace several environment textures with higher quality variants- Reworked/improved in-game fonts- First update in my texture pack collection that supports DDS BC7 (no support for DDS DXT1/5 from this point on for newer updates)- Added green shellV0.1:- Initial releaseCredits. It is about time! The first version of the Mario Kart 64 texture pack I have been porting for a while. It is still not done yet through.
Many thanks to masterotaku for his earlier work! I add more screenshots of ingame racing once I finished a few maps.
I probably redo all the screenshots once I am done and if we having a true working widescreen code. I don't know if my next update will be for Mario Kart 64, I would like to look into Zelda 64 once again at some point.
This update might not seem big, but there are a lot of textures being ported, most of them being duplicates.I am still in the progress of editing this thread. Let me know if I messed it up. Just wondering if it would be easy for you to show what it looked like before. I haven't played the game in years (probably on the actual console was the last time I played it) and so I don't remember how bad it looked.
Just a side note: Wondering if anyone is willing to re-texture Paper Mario 64 because I loved that game and would definitely help the project as I'm sure many people would, have you thought of it? I'm aware of a few people who tried to do it for the N64 Emu (didn't care for their re-textures because they deviated from the original textures too much) but not sure if anyone ever tried doing it to the virtual console version. I can't imagine it would be hard to use the GIMP vector pen on the original textures because they were naturally flat colors.

I could look into that, but not anytime soon yet.
First update V0.2.Regarding Paper Mario 64, I had some work done on the HUD, but only the HUD. I do not intend to do anymore than that. Paper Mario 64 is way too hard and way too big beyond the HUD. There is supposedly the New Paper Mario project by Nelde which is a texture pack for Paper Mario 64 (orginally for Project64, but now for Dolphin). But I haven't heard from the project in a while. My approach was put into the freezer a long time ago since I shifted towards Ocarina of Time (best game of all time before Breath of the Wild came, so that was a must-have to port completely), Majora's Mask (similar to OoT in scope) and Super Smash Bros.
64 (tedious but nothing too hard, quite relaxing too) after I was done with Super Mario 64. Perhaps after Mario Kart 64 again. Both Mario Kart 64 and Paper Mario 64 are a beast to retexture. I am not really that skilled, I might be even one of the less-skilled around here.
But there is a lot of fun to have with porting textures. So why not.EDIT: Work in progress.
